Many corporations have employee volunteer programs and send staff (paid and unpaid) into the community for service projects at local nonprofit and public organizations.

For Hewlett-Packard (HP) that also means making use of retirees for part-time volunteer work promoting HP. "Going to the Company Elders for Help" (New York Times, March 10, 2008) profiles John Toppel, who recently served as a volunteers salesperson for HP products at his local Circuit City. Mr. Toppel, who had a three decade tenure at HP, feels a sense of loyalty and pride in the company and doesn't expect payment, though outsiders bristle a the lack of compensation.

While HP has tapped retirees as volunteers (in the traditional sense of the word), other corporations are soliciting the volunteers (in the broadest sense of the word) from a much larger audience. If you think of all the ways you already contribute your time to for-profit corporations, by writing a restaurant review for Zagat, reviewing your doctor's skills on Yelp, or providing inventory for Ebay, you won't be surprised that corporations are looking for additional ways to capitalize on your "volunteer" contributions. Usually these opportunities are web-based.

The challenges to these "user contribution systems," according to a recent article in the Harvard Business Review, are to "learn how to spot opportunities for creating value from user contributions...[and] overcome natural organizational resistance to the idea of relinquishing significant control to people outside the company.

To read more about how for-profit corporations are capitalizing on volunteers, read below:

Click here to read the New York Times article about HP retirees serving as volunteers.
Click here to read the full article, "The Contribution Revolution: Letting Volunteers Build Your Business" from the Harvard Business Review

StoryCorps Returns to the Bay Area

StoryCorps returns to the Bay Area next month. The study concluded that some groups seemed to be excluded, including youth and retirees. The researchers found a statistically "weak but significant" link between civic participation and quality of life. The study also revealed that civil society is strongest in Northern Europe and weakest in Southern and Eastern Europe.

A separate study suggested that institutional settings like the welfare state regime and democratic rights explain the difference in the level of civic participation by country. It also suggested that the state is able to stimulate civic participation by providing a high level of social security and civil rights.

Senior Center Without Walls

Senior Center Without Walls, an innovative and award-winning program for homebound seniors, offers activities, classes, and support groups via the telephone. Her daughters were both on campus at the time. She later pursued a Green MBA, where she says, "the stress melts away, and it is just about improving yourself."

Jim retired from the aerospace industry (after an early career as a helicopter pilot in the Marines). He went back to school, taking every science course that he could find close to home (at Foothill College) and then went on to pursue two graduate degrees. Currently, he leaves home daily on a 5 a.m. boat to research his master's thesis on the impact of atmospheric carbon dioxide on algae. He plans to volunteer and tutor with his degrees.

Betty retired as a professor of nursing at University of San Francisco and about a week later became a student at Fromm Institute, also at USF.

Steve took a six figure pay cut to become a therapist. He found a good school close to work, and launched his master's program in family therapy. A few terms later, he took a supervised internship as a high school counselor and began reducing his hours at work before leaving officially a year ago.

Click here to read a more detailed profile of each of these later life students (a.k.a., "boomer resumers") and Hazel Soares, a 93-year-old Junior at Mills College.

Retirement Revised: Videos

Visit the YouTube webpage "Retirement Revised" to watch interviews about retirement, including topics such as long term care insurance, life planning, 50+ entrepreneurship, and starting a business at age 50. A recent Wall Street Journal article, " Who are you Calling Old? Labels Change as Americans Live Longer, but Age Still Plays a Role in Election" asks how much age should matter.

Test your presidential trivia:
Who was the youngest on ascension to office? On leaving office?
Who was the oldest?
What is the minimum age requirement for a President?

The article reminds us that a 45 year old and a 75 year old have the same mental capacity, and that energy is a function of health rather than age. NSADA would use "the power of the market to leverage a $5,000 federal investment into an $18,000 award for all young Americans who successfully complete a year of national service." AI hope NSADA would address enduring social problems by mobilizing the time and talents of Americans through national service, and suggest that current work by volunteers does not begin to tap the potential of the national service to transform our society.

In the same issue, The American Interest journal interviews Robert Putnam on social capital, or social trust. They talk of the difference between bonding and bridging social capital, the shortterm impact of diversity on social capital. He remarks,

"...We used to manage our problems through the context of social capital, which is just my jargon for saying that we would have discussions about them at church picnics, or on the bench at the bowling alley while waiting for our turn, or around the table over lunch at the Rotary Club, or at union halls and so forth. We were engaged in civic discourse, exchanging views on integrating the schools or constructing a highway system or the Russians or whatever the problem was. And now we don’t, because hardly anyone goes to those places anymore. We’re not at the church picnic or the bowling alley; we’re sitting at home watching TV."

Click here to read more about the NSADA proposal.
Click here to read The American Interest journal interview with Robert Putnam, author of Bowling Alone.

ENCORE Job Opportunity

An encore life stage, a term developed by Marc Freedman, is a new stage of work. As baby boomers approach retirement, many remain in the workplace, not only for income, but for the search of meaning and an opportunity to do work that matters. It can be a period of reinvention for an individual and a for the society that benefits.

At RSVP we recognize that the "good work" continuum spans volunteerism into paid work. As we hear of great encore career opportunities, we will let you know by posting them on our blog.

It fits that the opporutunity that we first publize (offered by Aspiranet) is infused with the encore spirit throughout. Not only is it a potential encore opportunity for the new hire, but it offers the Program Director the opportunity to build encore experiences for others. Please read on.

Encore After-School Project Director

Encore After-School Overview:
Aspiranet, a statewide nonprofit organization which provides a wide array of family support programs, is sponsoring an initiative to significantly increase after school program quality and enhance the workforce at two pilot locations (Oakland and Santa Clara Valley). Encore After School is a direct application of the national movement toward what Civic Ventures’ founder Marc Freedman calls encore careers (www.encore.org). As people enter the second half of life and recognize they will need to continue working, they often are looking for work that provides meaning and purpose. California state funding for after school programs has exponentially increased funding for after school programming; however this is met with the challenge of hiring and retaining qualified staff. This initiative will serve as a learning laboratory for developing promising practices in the following two areas:

The preparation of after school programs to support an intergenerational workforce

The development of recruitment messages and materials to attract, screen, place, and retain after school staff workers over the age of 55

For more information about this program, visit two of Apiranet’s programs: www.snbc.org and www.experiencecorps.org.

Position Overview:
The Encore After School Project Director works with a team to provide leadership, create an overall strategy, and manage implementation of the initiative to increase the number of older adults in the after school workforce in Oakland and Santa Clara Valley. This position will be supervised by Aspiranet Director of After School, Youth, Community Development Division and will partner with staff from the following organizations/programs:

Aspiranet After School Programs, Oakland

YMCA of Santa Clara Valley After School Programs

Experience Corps Bay Area

Position Responsibilities:

Recruit, screen, and train after school workers who are creative, outcomes-focused, skilled at building relationships, and able to make long-lasting commitments to after school programs.

Research the workforce needs of after school programs, define after school programs’ organizational needs and roles, match the needs of after school programs with the labor market of older adults.

Develop strategic marketing campaign to recruit adults 55 and older to work in after school programs.

Establish a positive, collaborative working relationship with After School Program Directors, school district, and community based organizations to ensure that all stakeholders are engaged in this initiative.

Develop quality assessment tools and provide feedback to improve the effectiveness of this initiative.

Train after school site coordinators in ways to support older adults as employees.

Prepare reports for funders on a timely basis.

Consolidate learnings from the Encore After School Initiative after completion of two year pilot project.

Profile of the Successful Candidate:

Understands and has experience in the field of after school programs.

Understands and has experience with intergenerational programs.

Experience in program management.

Bachelors degree in education, non profit management or related field

Candidates for this position should be well organized and possess analytical skills, confidence, sensitivity, discretion and tact.

Knowledge of and experience with the principles and practices of supervision.

Must possess an understanding of and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds of the students enrolled in after school programs in Oakland and Santa Clara County.
