- Research where jobs are. Look at fields with strong job growth. Try jobsites for the 50+ population. Look at AARP's list of age friendly employers by clicking here.
- Connect with a network. Look for individuals who have already re-careered. Join the online "encore nation" at by clicking here.
- Upgrade your skills and education. Consider pursuing necessary course work or degree while you are still working.
- Evaluate your finances. Preparing for a second career can add up through tuition fees. Entrepreneurial careers can cause you to dig into your savings. Philanthropic careers may compensate at a lower rate than your first career and impact how much Social Security you can draw. Weigh each of these before pursing an encore career.
