Want to get involved? Tutor training begins in August!

Monday, July 30, 2007

Join an innovative tutoring partnership located in more than 15 elementary and middle schools in San Francisco, Oakland, and San Rafael. Experience Corps offers training and support to volunteers who are interested in enhancing the learning experiences of younger students. Pre-service trainings will take place on August 21st and August 23rd at 1pm. Call the RSVP office to register at 415-731-3335.

Experience Corps, an award-winning program, engages people over 55 in meeting their communities greatest challenges, beginning with literacy.

What do Experience Corps/RSVP tutors do? Tutors work in neighborhood schools with children who need extra help. Tutors are trained to help students learn the skills they need to succeed in school and in life.

Why is tutoring important? Today, one out of two California fourth graders lacks “basic” literacy skills. These children are much more likely to become frustrated, develop behavior problems, and do poorly in school. In the long term, they are unlikely to attend college and likely to have trouble finding work.

Can I really make a difference? Absolutely, 90% of teachers reported “significant” improvement in academic progress of students being tutored by Experience Corps members.

I’m enjoying my freedom these days. Will I have to give it up to tutor? There are many tutoring opportunities available to fit your schedule.
